    Role of Genetic and Acquired Prothrombotic Risk Factors in Genesis of Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

    The methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase C677T mutation, factor V G1691A (factor V Leiden) mutation, prothrombin G20210A mutation and 8 other laboratory values associated with increased thrombotic risk were analyzed in 40 patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL). The results were compared with those obtained from 120 controls not affected by SSHL. We found a statistically significant higher frequency of hyperhomocysteinemia in the SSHL group compared with controls, and that this was also associated with the presence of homozygosity for the MTHFR C677T mutation. The study results suggest that SSHL might be caused, among other factors, by a combination of these 2 variables. We suggest that this analysis of the MTHFR C677T mutation should be further investigated to establish the etiology of SSHL, and that the same analysis should be taken into account in those patients with high levels of homocysteine

    Designing CIGS solar cells with front-side point contacts

    In this work we show how 2D numerical simulations can be used to design and optimize front-side point contacts in surface-passivated CIGS cells. Detailed analysis of the combinations of passivation thickness, point contact size and pitch can help identifying solutions able to boost the performance of otherwise surface-limited cells: efficiencies close to those of cells with ideal (i.e., trap-free) CdS/CIGS interface can be achieved by the optimization of point contact features in the low nm range. The effect of varying the CIGS and CdS doping densities on the cell performance has also been analyzed

    The aim of this work is the thermal design of a modular direct liquid cooled package for 1200 V–35 A SiC power MOSFETs, in order to take full advantage of the high power density and high frequency performance of these devices, in the development of a modular integrated solution for power converters. An accurate electro-thermal fluid dynamic model is set up and validated by thermal characterization on a prototype; numerical models have been used to study the internal temperature distribution and to propose further optimization

    In this paper, a three-port, galvanic isolated, bidirectional power converter is proposed to control the power flow between the main dc buses, low voltage loads and energy storage unit on a generic airplane. A simplified model of the converter is presented to explain the control strategies design procedure. Simulations of the developed closed-loop controller that manages the energy exchange in different operating conditions are provided. Finally, a laboratory prototype based on GaN power devices is described and basic experimental results are presented
